What is the History of Kleenex Facial Tissue?

by Tami Boyd, SupplyTime Product Expert

When were facial tissues invented?

Facial tissues were introduced to consumers in 1924 under the brand name Kleenex, manufactured by Kimberly-Clark. However, some historical accounts show that disposable tissue papers were used in Japan to blow noses for centuries. Kleenex tissues were first invented and marketed to be used as a cold cream and makeup remover. The Kleenex brand name has become a common name for all facial tissues. It is more likely that someone will ask if you have a Kleenex than ask if you have a facial tissue.

How were Kleenex invented?

During World War I, Kimberly-Clark provided the U.S. Military with a creped cellulose product they had trademarked to be used for gas mask filters and bandages. At the end of the war this unique product called Cellucotton needed a new market. During the 1920’s Kimberly-Clark used this cotton substitute product in their Kotex brand of feminine sanitary napkin pads. Due to consumer embarrassment or modesty, Kotex was not as successful as they had initially hoped. This led to the invention of Kleenex facial tissues. Although marketed as a personal wiper for removing make up, a Kimberly-Clark researcher suffering from hay fever persuaded the advertising team to promote Kleenex as a disposable handkerchief. Today Kleenex brand facial tissues are the best selling brand of tissues on the market.
