Laundry

Introduction
In general “detergent” is a mixture of alkylbenzenesulfonates (non-soap surfactants) which are similar to soap but are less affected by hard water.  Natural soap is highly sensitive to deactivation by hard water.  Synthetic detergents really improved laundry washing over soap.

From ancient times civilizations have been mixing various components to wash clothing.  The Italians mixed sulfur with water and charcoal to clean cloth.  Egyptians used ashes and silicates to soften water.

Due to the shortages of soap in Germany during World War I the detergent effects of some synthetic surfactants were discovered.  In the 1930’s we saw the rise of several detergent brands that were intended for industrial use.  The German brand FEWA, manufactured by BASF, and Dreft the U.S. brand made by Procter and Gamble were the earliest synthetic detergents.  After World War II new developments created a quick growth in the domestic market in the late 1940’s.

Detergents were further improved with the discovery of alkylbenzenesulfonates which when combined with “chemical builders” made machine washing with hard water possible.  This lead to the creation of Tide by Procter & Gamble in 1946, and by 1949 Tide was distributed nation wide.  Tide powdered laundry detergent was a synthetic detergent designed for heavy duty machine cleaning, an advance in technology over FEWA and Dreft.

Later liquid detergents were introduced.  Tide’s first liquid laundry detergent was orange tinted.  Today most of Tide liquids both Ultra and Non-Ultra are dark blue with the exception of the clear “Tide Free”.  Today liquid laundry detergents have a major market share.

We have a multitude of laundry products today.  Fabric softeners, prewash stain removers, enzyme presoaks, oxygen bleach detergents, combo detergents with softeners, bleach and enzymes, ultra concentrated powder and liquid detergents, gels, HE (high efficiency) laundry detergents for high efficiency washing machines that use less water, and biodegradable eco-friendly laundry detergents.

SupplyTime.com carries brands like Ajax, All, Arm & Hammer, Dynamo, Fab, Final Touch, Fresh Start, Gain, Green Works, Purex, Seventh Generation, Sunlight, Tide, Wisk, and Woolite.

Baskets & Accessories
Use Rubbermaid’s large mesh laundry nets to protect your mops and pads when cleaning them in a machine washer.  Rubbermaid’s commercial step-on linen hamper and hamper bags provide a sanitary way to store your dirty laundry.  This bag system helps you comply with OSHA regulation 29CFR 1910.1030, Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.  They are ideal for the healthcare facilities, emergency rooms, changing rooms and patient rooms.

Bleach
Chlorine bleaches and non-chlorine bleaches (hydrogen peroxide) can be used in regular and high efficiency washers.

Clorox offers bleach options with different concentrations.  Clorox regular bleach removes stains, and has excellent antibacterial, germicidal and fungicidal properties that kill up to 99.9% of household germs.  Clorox lemon scent cleans, disinfects and deodorizes.  Clorox’s germicidal concentrated bleach is EPA registered and eliminates more organisms than the Ultra Clorox.  It has twice the strength of the Ultra so you can cut your amount in half making it more economical.  The Clorox Bleach Pen is great for the laundry room, when you’re on the go, and for cleaning caulking and grout.  The gel formula won’t splash or over spray.

Pure Bright bleach is a great value, removes stains from clothing and keeps your clothes bright white.  Borateem powder, with Color Seal, helps prevent fading.  Green Works is a chlorine-free, color safe product that contains hydrogen peroxide.

Personally Speaking
If you are debating on whether to purchase a high-efficiency washing machine think about the benefits.  They save wear and tear on the environment and your clothes.  They are guaranteed to save you some money on your electric and water bills.  And they are considered to get clothes cleaner than traditional washers.  You will use less electricity to heat the water because you use less water. The spin cycle removes more excess water; there will be less drying time in the clothes dryer, saving more electricity.  The high-efficiency detergents are formulated to product less suds than normal detergents, leaving no residues on clothes.  Because you use less water, the clothing tumbles in and then out of the water creating more suds than a regular washing machine. So be sure to use a HE high efficiency laundry detergent if you have a high efficiency washer.  They are more expensive though but the benefits may be worth it in the long run.

Have a great day
