Introduction
In general “detergent” is a mixture of alkylbenzenesulfonates (non-soap surfactants) which are similar to soap but are less affected by hard water. Natural soap is highly sensitive to deactivation by hard water. Synthetic detergents really improved laundry washing over soap. From ancient times civilizations have been mixing various components to wash clothing. The Italians mixed sulfur with water and charcoal to clean cloth. Egyptians used ashes and silicates to soften water. Due to the shortages of soap in Germany during World War I the detergent effects of some synthetic surfactants were discovered. In the 1930’s we saw the rise of several detergent brands that were intended for industrial use. The German brand FEWA, manufactured by BASF, and Dreft the U.S. brand made by Procter and Gamble were the earliest synthetic detergents. After World War II new developments created a quick growth in the domestic market in the late 1940’s. Detergents were further improved with the discovery of alkylbenzenesulfonates which when combined with “chemical builders” made machine washing with hard water possible. This lead to the creation of Tide by Procter & Gamble in 1946, and by 1949 Tide was distributed nation wide. Tide powdered laundry detergent was a synthetic detergent designed for heavy duty machine cleaning, an advance in technology over FEWA and Dreft. Later liquid detergents were introduced. Tide’s first liquid laundry detergent was orange tinted. Today most of Tide liquids both Ultra and Non-Ultra are dark blue with the exception of the clear “Tide Free”.
